Merilee H. June 2022 Volunteer Spotlight

I started volunteering at FIA at the onset of Covid. My church had a list of local organizations that were looking for volunteers, especially at that time. My Mom had been a Care Receiver with FIA, so I thought volunteering here would be a good way for me to give back to them as well as serve the community. I volunteer at the transportation desk and am also a driver.

I am a stay-at-home mom. My youngest will graduate high school next ye ar, so that will make me an empty-nester, but will I be considered retired?? As for hobbies, I enjoy reading as well as dabbling in crafts of all kinds. I also volunteer at my church in the kids’ area.

A favorite FIA story is when a Care Receiver taught me how to make fried chicken. It was delicious! As a driver, I enjoy talking with the Care Receivers and getting to know them, hearing their stories, and even learning new things. When I’m volunteering at the Transportation Desk, I hear firsthand the Thank-Yous and appreciation from Care Receivers for all the help they get from FIA volunteers. When someone I’ve driven calls in to schedule a ride, I’m like “Hey, I know you.” It’s fun, plus the staff is great!
