Volunteer in the SPOTLIGHT interview with … Gus Butorac
When did you became a volunteer for FIA and what volunteer positions have you chosen do?
Gus had been retired for a couple years and felt he needed a change. Someone suggested he give FIA a try, so he did.
Gus became a volunteer for Faith in Action in spring of 2018. Starting out with Medical Transportation rides with Faith in Action, but now has added more of the hands-on home chore tasks. He recently made some bird feeder boxes for a care receiver to put along her outside amp.
Words of Wisdom on life:
“Do some push ups“
“Whenever my kids were bored / cold or whatever and complaining I would just tell them to do some push-ups. That let them know I was listening but would not stand for the complaining.”
Have you lived in the area long? … Places you have lived?
Gus has lived in Bloomington for 30+ years. He grew up in Minnesota.
He says that not counting his college years he has only lived in 2 houses.
Where did you go to school?
He went to St. Cloud State University in Minnesota.
Jobs/ Careers?
He worked 15 years at ISU as a Z/OS System Programmer then 16 years at State Farm as a WebSphere Administrator.
Hobbies/ past times/ passions?
Biking/Running/traveling/yard work.
Family/ Pets?
His family includes, 2 girls, 1 boy. He says… “they all, unlike me, have always enjoyed cats!”
Anything unique and unusual about yourself you would like to share?
In 2016 I ran on every street in Bloomington/Normal.
It took over 14 months and covered about 1024 miles.
