Judy Peppers – July 2019 Volunteer

I became a Faith in Action volunteer around three years ago. The idea of helping seniors in our community remain independent, in addition to selecting times to volunteer that work with my schedule, made volunteering with Faith in Action an easy choice.  I began as a driver for care receivers, added the role of Assessment Coordinator, and most recently led a bus trip to Branson.

Volunteering has always been a part of my life, and there are a number of great opportunities in our community.  A few years ago, a friend of mine mentioned they volunteered with Faith in Action, and shortly thereafter, Doretta Herr spoke at an organization to which I belong. Her presentation cemented that Faith in Action was a good volunteer fit for me.  I’ve met many great people and have made many great memories.

I’m from Downers Grove, IL, and arrived in Normal to attend ISU where I earned both bachelors and Master’s degrees.  I stayed locally after graduation and worked for ISU for 30 years, starting as an entry-level support person and retiring as an instructor.  I had the pleasure of working in three academic departments, and three non-academic units.  ISU was very good to me and I’m a life-long Redbird supporter.

Since retirement, I’ve held jobs that involve either older adults or children.  I’m completing my fifth year as a District 87 elementary substitute lucky enough to work in school libraries and assisting reading teachers.  If reading can be considered a hobby, then I’m in!  While I still enjoy reading an actual hold-in-your-hand book, I’m adjusting to more on-line reading.  So convenient!

There are so many ways to assist Faith in Action as a volunteer.  I believe there is a niche for everyone.  My email address is [email protected].  Please feel free to contact me.
